Benjamin Engel

Ben Engel, counsel to the Firm and a retired member, is experienced in corporate and commercial law, advising for-profit and non-profit clients in a wide variety of business contexts. His experience includes purchases and sales of businesses; mergers, acquisitions, and divestitures; private placements of securities; venture capital transactions; secured transactions, restructurings and workouts; informal compositions with creditors; and resolving disputes within businesses.

Experience

Mr. Engel's experience also includes the formation of corporations, partnerships, and limited liability companies; drafting governing documents; negotiation and preparation of contracts covering a range of business relationships and resolution of disputes; and corporate dissolution and winding up. He has also handled the organization and structuring of professional health care practices, including counseling on Federal anti-kickback and self-referral issues.
Mr. Engel is the president of the nonprofit Capital Classics Theatre Company, which produces the annual Greater Hartford Shakespeare Festival and other theatrical events. He is also a former president of Emanuel Synagogue of West Hartford and a life member of its Board of Trustees; and former member of the board of the Commission on Jewish Education of Greater Hartford. He has chaired numerous charitable capital campaigns and other fundraising events and tutored students of English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) at Literacy Volunteers of Greater Hartford. Mr. Engel has also authored four plays and, prior to becoming a lawyer, was a reporter and editor for newspapers in Connecticut and Kentucky.

Education

He is a graduate of Princeton University (A.B., cum laude, 1977); Stanford University (A.M., 1979); and University of Connecticut School of Law (J.D., with honors, 1987).
